Contrary to the beliefs of some, quilting is one of the oldest art forms in recorded history. The art of
quilting manifests itself in two areas. One way is through the creation of the quilt. Layers of fabric
are usually stitched together with a soft matting material between. The stitching is either done "by hand"
or with a machine. The intricate patterns created by the person doing the stitching creates the art.
Beautiful designs and intricate patterns are developed with the stitching that amazes the viewer. What is
done with the fabric before it is stitched together creates the other art form in quilting. The fabrics sewn
together are either made from material "patched together", as in patched worked quilts, materials sewn on to
other materials (appliqued), or just wonderfully dyed fabrics being quilted together.
"Quilts of Central New York-2005" is an exhibition of all forms of quilting. The viewer will see quilts ranging
from the traditional patch worked quilts to the new abstract fiber art that is being created.
The Quilters in this exhibition are Sally Dutko, Rebecca Howdeshell, Melissa Craven Fowler, Annette Short,
Joan Lockburner Deuel, Judith Plotner, Joyce Paulsen, Katherine Nicholson, Linda Salitrynski, Phylis Schatz,
Pat Martin, Kaethe Mitchell, Ruth Ann White, Suzanne Sullivan, Holly Knott, Mary Diamond, Jeannie King,
Ethal Whitamore, Estie Mowry, Elena Morin, and Cindy Henry.
